The school of life
“Find a job you love and you will never work another day, Confucius once said. Unfortunately, that’s often easier said than done. We know very well wat the perfect job gives us: satisfaction, lots of money, high social status, challenges, respect, personal development, a better world and a whole lot of fun. We know something else as well: this dream job is not ours. In this class we will dive into your expectations from work, your ambitions and dreams, and we will take you to thinkers old and new for exciting perspectives on this ever-important question.
We will start by taking a look at the factors that codetermine our career choices (family background, personality traits) in order to find out whether they help or hurt us. But we will also delve into other relevant and sometimes difficult questions. Should we strive for money or status/fame? How important is it to have a job that embodies your values? Or that perfectly suits your talents and capabilities? Should you be a jack of all trades or a master of one? And, of course, the million-dollar question: will your dream job eventually give you the satisfaction that you expect to get from it?
Perhaps this class will show you that it is time to make your move. Or maybe you will come to the conclusion that your current job does in fact suit your needs. Whatever the case may be, you will end up with a deeper and more complete view on your own expectations and desires when it comes to work, as well as what steps to take to find the job you love.”
